Abstract

World over, the effects of greenhouse gas emissions are visible, and this has led the quest for sustainable, biodegradable, and renewable materials such as biocomposites. Biocomposites are a class of composites whereby the filler material and the matrix are eco-friendly and biodegradable. The majority of biodegradable matrices are thermoplastic; however, that notwithstanding research in thermoset matrices is on the rise with some industrial players producing thermoset matrices with precursors from plant sources. The first part of the chapter introduces green thermoset matrices from both renewable and nonrenewable sources, the process of preparation and manufacturing is discussed. The potential of biodegradable thermoset biocomposites for industrial applications is elaborated with examples.
