Abstract

Neurorehabilitation is a subspecialty within the larger field of rehabilitation. This subspecialty aims to reduce dysfunction and improve the health and well-being of those with diseases, disorders, or traumatic injuries that affect the nervous system. This chapter provides an overview of the fundamentals of neurorehabilitation. After a brief introduction, common diagnoses treated by practitioners specializing in this field are highlighted, with a particular emphasis on the clinical sequelae associated with stroke. This is followed by a presentation of the key components of stroke rehabilitation, including a brief overview of the typical continuum of stroke care in the United States; common stroke assessments; and an overview of evidence-based intervention.
