Abstract

Emissions from coal, oil, and gas are a key contributor to global warming. Until recently, however, the production and export of these fossil fuels has largely been ignored by climate policymakers. This chapter discusses some of the reasons that fossil fuel exports have been excluded from climate policy discussions and outlines the rationale for addressing fossil fuel exports as a component of climate policy. It outlines the critical role that civil society has played in bringing the issue of climate change mitigation and fossil fuel export together and discusses how further research on public responses to climate change and fossil production and export might help inform future climate and energy transition policies.
