Abstract
This chapter discusses the ways of exploring and configuring the desktop settings; changing the desktop theme and background; modifying the appearance of the desktop; configuring and modifying the start menu and taskbar; and configuring “my computer,” “my network places,” and “my documents.” While exploring the desktop settings, one discovers the way of changing one's display options and changing the general appearance of the desktop by using themes and different backgrounds. The use of screen savers and how they can have a practical use with regard to security and being visually appealing is introduced in the chapter. The various ways to access the desktop settings, along with the use of the command line to access Control Panel applets by using their .cpl files are explored in the chapter. The start menu is the way by which the majority of users access their programs, but the taskbar, which can provide a quick and functional way to access frequently used programs, is explored in the chapter.
