Abstract

Publisher Summary The literature reviews on Japanese alexia and agraphia published since 1901 disclose a number of dissociations in performance between various aspects of the writing system. Six types of dissociation have been reported over the past 80 years: (1) better performance in kanji than in kana processing, (2) better performance in kana than in kanji processing, (3) better performance in oral reading than in reading, (4) better performance in reading comprehension than in oral reading, (5) use of an inappropriate On-reading instead of the required Kun-reading of kanji, and (6) use of an inappropriate Kun-reading instead of the required On-reading of kanji. This chapter describes 69 clinical cases of alexia in Japanese patients. The original case interpretations of various authors are reported in this chapter.
