Abstract

Glycolipid biosurfactants have potential for metal recovery applications from aqueous systems. Recovering toxic and critical materials from contaminated and natural waters will be an integral part of future of green and circular economies. This chapter begins with an introduction to glycolipids and then discusses recent advances in the synthetic production of “bioinspired” surfactants using green chemistry approaches. These synthetic glycolipids can be structurally tuned for specific metal recovery applications and still retain their environmental compatibility. Finally, both natural and synthetic glycolipids are discussed in terms of their interaction with metals and potential applications for recovery of metals from aqueous waste streams.
