Abstract

Object-based learning (OBL) is an emerging pedagogy in higher education. Drawing on practices established by museum educators, faculty are integrating OBL into their courses because it engages students in authentic learning. For librarians, OBL presents exciting opportunities to partner with faculty, teach information literacy concepts, and advocate for digital presentation formats over the traditional research paper. This chapter offers historical and theoretical rationales for OBL. It highlights examples of OBL in academic libraries, arguing that OBL motivates students to conduct original research and gives them the experience of working in a professional manner.
