Chapter 3 - Auxiliary Equipment

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the various auxiliary support equipment used in drilling, well completion, production operations, and associated activities regarding oil field activities. The chapter discusses the basic operation features and specifications needed by a user. The purpose is to provide the user the information required to ensure whether the equipment available for a certain field operation is adequate. Else, it is to check how to specify what equipment is necessary if the equipment available is not adequate. The prime mover is the unit that first converts an energy source into a mechanical force. Typical prime movers are internal combustion motors, gas turbines, water turbines, steam engines, and electrical motors. In nearly all mechanical power applications in the oil and gas industry, it is necessary to transmit the power generated by a prime mover to an operation. The transmission of rotary power to such operation elements is carried out by a power transmission system. Pumps are a mechanical device that forces a fluid to move from one position to another. Usually, a pump refers to the mechanical means to move incompressible or nearly incompressible fluid or liquid. Compressors of various designs and manufacturers are used in many operations throughout the oil and gas industry.
