Abstract

This chapter presents additional scientific insights about ownership and usage of privately-owned autonomous vehicles (PAVs). A stated preference (SP) survey was conducted to investigate not only choices of PAVs with conditional automation, high automation and full automation (as compared with conventional vehicles under different scenarios of PAV attributes), but also intended time use inside PAVs. Vehicle type choices are represented by using a mixed logit model with repeated choices and time use inside PAVs by using a multilevel simultaneous-equation negative binomial regression model. Data were collected in Japan in 2016. Modeling analysis results confirmed both positive and negative effects of each PAV attribute and willingness to pay on PAV ownership, and various effects of risky driving experience, driving preference, and individual attributes on the time use. Finally, future research issues are summarized.
