Abstract

In developing countries, waste management is often dominated by the informal sector. Various examples around the world demonstrate that informal waste management can be effective, reaching high collection and material recovery rates. However, such activities are also often related to adverse effects for humans and the environment. This chapter presents two examples of solid waste management by the Zabbaleen in Egypt and e-waste management in various developing countries. It intends to impart an understanding of how informal waste management is functioning, discusses the environmental and socioeconomic effects, and point out failures and approaches on how to link informal and formal waste management activities.
