Abstract

Therapeutic peptides possess a unique set of advantages over large biologics and small molecules that make them an attractive treatment modality for certain diseases. As such, the market for this class of therapeutics is strong, accounting for approximately 5% of the global pharmaceutical market with US$50 billion in sales, and is poised for continued growth in the near future. In this chapter, we provide our perspectives on the past and present states of the therapeutic peptide market. We also provide a framework for assessing the market value of companies with therapeutic peptide assets. In addition, we briefly discuss current approaches for manufacturing therapeutic peptides. As the market for therapeutic peptides continues to grow, new manufacturing approaches will be needed to reduce costs, increase production scale, and improve efficiency. We provide examples of innovative manufacturing strategies that have the potential to be implemented in the industrial setting.
