Abstract
Nystamus is an involuntary ocular movement of the eyes. Typically, there is a slow movement followed by a fast movement. They can be horizontal, vertical, torsional or a combination of all three. It can be congential, present in early childhood or become acquired in adulthood. Nystagmus is classified on the type of movement, amplitude and frequency. Nystagmus can be seen without pathologic disease, but most patients need full ophthalmic and often systemic evaluations to determine cause of their nystagmus. Patients with poor vision and nystagmus have underlying eye pathology affecting sensory visual input form cataract, optic nerve hypoplasia, albinism or other causes of decreased visual acuity. Null points and nystagmus blockage syndrome are discussed. Surgical and nonsurgical treatments are presented.
