Abstract

Incretins are gut-derived hormones that stimulate pancreatic insulin secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. Incretins-based therapies interfere with disease progression when enough β-cell mass/function can still be restored. There are two types of drugs based on incretin action: an incretin mimetic and an incretin enhancer. The compounds that increase incretins include DPP-4 inhibitors, or gliptins. Other chemicals that inhibit DDP-4 include berberine and lupeol.
