Abstract

Peptide drug discovery over the past decade has gained momentum, with the pharmaceutical industry focusing on innovative drug development for an increasing number of therapeutic treatments. Peptide-based drugs can complement biological therapeutics, thus widely opening up the scope of their use. The global peptide drug market is expected to surpass US$50 billion by 2026. Over 800 peptide-based drugs are in various stages of clinical trials all over the world. This chapter describes the evolution of peptide therapeutics with a brief review of their synthesis, classification, and cellular uptake mechanisms. The later part of the chapter focuses on approved peptide drugs, preclinical data, and the future of peptide therapeutics.
