Abstract

Artificial intelligence has the potential to lead to dramatic enhancements in patient care, research, and education across numerous disciplines within medicine. One field that is known for its history of continual innovation and creativity is plastic and reconstructive surgery. To that end, the promise of artificial intelligence and associated technologies is large within plastic surgery. Various forms of artificial intelligence, including machine learning, data analytics (i.e., big data), robotics, and computer vision, have already been utilized in the clinical environment. However, much additional work in the form of ideation, development, and implementation—as well as subsequent testing—is required for widespread clinical use. This chapter will address the current uses as well as future directions of artificial intelligence in plastic surgery.
