Abstract

This chapter reports outcomes of anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED). Recovery rates increased over time. A considerable percentage of patients maintain their symptoms for a long time, and mortality is higher than in the average population, particularly for patients with AN. Crossover between AN and BN is frequent, whereas crossover from AN to BED is extremely low. One risk factor for unfavorable outcomes in all patients with eating disorders is symptom severity (low body weight, frequency of bingeing, and inappropriate compensatory behavior). In patients with AN, treatment at younger age improves the prognosis. Psychiatric comorbidities are risk factors for unfavorable outcomes in patients with BN and BED.
