Abstract

The rapid development of mobile computers, personal digital assistants (PDA) and cell phones has created a need for research into their use for the display of maps. The goal of this research is to design an effective user interface for maps on PDAs. The focus of the research is to optimize the visualization of the geographic information in the small display and to provide a self-explanatory user guide. Besides maintaining a user profile, it is also important to consider the communication between the device and the user. The chapter concludes with various suggestions that are offered for the designing of an effective PDA user interface. As the use of PDAs for the display of maps becomes more and more widespread, researchers are striving to devise better ways to maximize the visualization of geographic information on the relatively small screens. When designing the PDA user interface, it is important to consider the processor capacity, the limitations of the software package, and all of the elements of good design that are listed by the chapter.
