Abstract
The respiratory system is a target for a wide range of toxic environmental contaminants. While the acute and chronic effects of a large number of these substances have been well characterized for the respiratory system of adult mammals, there is significantly less known about the impact of these lung-targeted compounds on the developing respiratory system. This chapter summarizes what is currently known about the majority of these compounds, addressing first environmental tobacco smoke, a well-recognized lung toxicant mixture; bioactivated environmental contaminants; oxidant gases; therapeutic glucocorticosteroids; and other miscellaneous compounds that have been shown to alter lung development.
