Abstract

Electronic drug delivery system (EDDS) is among the advanced approach to drug delivery. EDDS is an exciting advancement among the drug delivery technologies due to the fact that the devices are portable and wirelessly connected while also increasing patient compliance. With the electronic drug delivery approach, the dosage amount is minimized due to the precise drug release while also minimizing the possible toxicity effects. This chapter focuses on the electronic drug delivery systems and devices, with emphasis on electronic pumps, capsules, transdermal DDS, autoinjectors, and microchip based DDS. The working principles of the various electronic drug delivery systems are discussed, together with the areas of applications. The future prospects of EDDS are also highlighted. The chapter concludes by highlighting the advantages and drawbacks of electronic drug delivery systems and emphasis on the need for further technological developments.
