Abstract
This chapter introduces the tokamak technology which is being pushed at the limits by the ITER project, a unique fusion experiment in the world. Aimed at demonstrating the feasibility of controlled nuclear fusion on earth, ITER could play an important role in the future electricity supply. If ITER succeeds, fusion could become a new technology used on an industrial scale to produce electricity in a safe and environment-friendly way as fusion uses an almost inexhaustible fuel and produces little waste. The stakes are therefore high. The ITER seven members, who decided to build the machine together, realized this quite a long time ago. However, there is still a long way to go, with technological hurdles and project management difficulties. This chapter presents the history of the project, the current status of this complex program, and its many different dimensions—historical, scientific, technical, political, economic, and human.
