Abstract

This chapter provides practice guidance about legal issues and publishing deals in the world of video games. Video game industry sales in 2007 (hardware and software) were about $1.25 billion per month. Video games are a tough business with huge potential rewards. Building value in a game development company requires a skilled development team with great game products, and also valuable intellectual property (IP), and smart deals. The chapter provides an overview of some of the characteristics of video games, and the video game industry that underlies its legal issues and affects video game deals. It discusses how intellectual property laws apply to video games, and explains key legal issues and negotiation strategies for publishing agreements. The chapter concludes with an overview of some legal and practical issues for massively multiplayer online games.
