Abstract

Millions of people worldwide suffer from substance and behavioral addictions. Addiction is a multifactorial and debilitating disease associated with a cluster of cognitive, behavioral, and physiological symptoms. Untreated, it results in significant negative consequences for the addicted people and their families and society. A multidisciplinary, comprehensive, and multisectoral collaborative treatment approach is needed to help people with addiction successfully participate in a rehabilitation program. To have a high success rate and long-term abstinence, allopathic pharmacological interventions are vital, and yet complementary alternative medicine (CAMs) may offer additional support to achieve long-term abstinence. Evidence supports the successful integration of CAM into rehabilitation treatment for addiction. This chapter examines the potential of various CAMs, including herbal preparations, mindfulness-based interventions, massage therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, hypnosis, physical exercise, and acupuncture-related therapies as part of a multifaceted treatment program for addiction.
