Abstract

This chapter discusses how researchers working in laboratories should lead their personal lives, and how many of the tools that they have used on the job can help them with situations at home and with friends. Children and child care are particularly important issues in the laboratory because of the nature of this type of work. Academia and the biotechnology industry require scientists to be flexible in terms of where they live, causing them to move around the country or the world as frequently as every two to three years. Consequently, when the day care center calls in the middle of a meeting to inform parents of a sick child, one member of the family will need to leave the workplace. By appreciating the role of family and friends in one's life, one will be a better leader and manager for others in one's laboratory. One needs to make sure that one spends time with family and friends, and encourages one's employees to do so as well.
