Abstract

Despite many efforts to regenerate destroyed periodontium, limited success has been achieved in treating diseased periodontal structures. One promising approach for this regenerative purpose is to use adult stem cells with appropriate carriers. Although these stem cells, including periodontal ligament stem cells, have not been proven as a definite clinical treatment modality, there are plenty of research activities to improve established protocols for periodontal regeneration. In this chapter, the characteristics of periodontal ligament stem cells and induced stem cells from periodontal ligament cells are reviewed along with epithelial stem cells from periodontal ligament tissue.
