Abstract

High fluoride levels in groundwater have resulted in several health issues for millions of individuals across the world. The proposed study provides an overview of fluoride contamination in the groundwater, its source, and the mechanism of release to the aquifer. The study also focused on the distribution of fluoride in different aquifer systems to provide an idea about factors like soil properties, geological setting, climatic conditions, and water type, which are the main influences on the release of fluoride into the subsurface aquifer. The study also includes a review on geographical information systems (GIS) and statistical approaches to determine the extent of fluoride contamination, which can be used as a preliminary attempt to localize and remediate the problem. Furthermore, an application of GIS and statistics to fluoride contamination is also illustrated from a complex hard-rock aquifer of the Krishnagiri District of south India.
