Abstract

The anal margin consists of keratin-containing epithelium with hair follicles, encompassing a radius of 5cm from the anal verge. It is also termed perianal skin. The anal verge is the junction of the squamous epithelium-lined anal canal with the anal margin. The lining of the anal canal proximal to the dentate line consists of nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium. The dentate line demarcates the transition to columnar epithelium. Anal margin lesions include squamous cell cancer, Bowen’s disease, Paget’s disease, verrucous carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
