Abstract

This chapter focuses on various novel types of polymer nanocomposites and hybrids for high temperature lubricating coating and thin film applications. It contains the classification of organic–inorganic hybrids, their methods of preparation, relevance to biomaterial's friction, with fundamental mechanisms of tribology in these materials and establishes the lubrication mechanism of such coatings and thin films. Also, it introduces some specialized novel characterization tools for probing the fundamental tribological behavior of nanocomposites and hybrids at the molecular level. Finally, their usefulness for a wide variety of applications is presented along with the future outlook.
