Abstract

Human factors and ergonomics concern the ability of personnel to perform their job functions with the physical and mental capabilities or limitations of a human being. A human error or reliability analysis is discussed along with the probabilities for human error to occur. The attitude influence effect of human performance is examined in detail. Various types of attitudes are identified and described. Design and function of control room consoles are reviewed to highlight how these can contribute to an incident. Field or plant devices are also discussed. The various categories of instructions, markings, and identifications for labeling or signage are detailed. Standard colors that have been adopted in the industrial world for the identification of hazards, marking of safety equipment, and operating modes of typical equipment are identified. Noise hazards are described and how they can contribute to incidents. Finally, the concern of panic and security is addressed.
