Abstract

This particular chapter spotlights various pulp and paper industry perspectives with reference to the economic feasibility, environmental regulation, notable limitations, and considerable innovations. Conventional practices in the pulp and paper industry are the leading causes of pollution in different environmental matrices and water bodies. Considering the futuristic viewpoints given in the sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly Goal #9, that is, (industry innovation and infrastructure) the integration of new less energy-/water-consuming processes and environmentally friendlier practices are of supreme interest. One possible example is the involvement of integrated biorefinery concept can play a synergistic role by using the pulp and paper industry waste feedstock and generate valuable products with a zero-waste or zero-emission phenomenon. This ideally implies SDGs #9, as gaining valuable energy resources and other industrial products from the same industry waste is a revolutionary and innovative concept for developing a sustainable pulp and paper industry.
