Abstract

Encapsulation is a technology used in regenerative medicine and other applications. It is used to immobilize drugs, cells, and other molecules and is beneficial in the protection of the enclosed materials and their controlled release. This chapter is a review of encapsulation used in ligament and tendon regeneration. It gives an overview of the technology and the main purposes of encapsulation and discusses the techniques, mechanisms, and difficulties involved in encapsulation including physical, chemical, or photo-crosslinking, along with the natural and synthetic biomaterials used specifically in tendon and ligament treatment encapsulation. The limitations and future developments are also discussed.
