Abstract
The outstanding features of capillary electrophoresis (CE) make it a suitable technique to increase understanding in the field of neuroscience. Its low injection volume is of utmost importance in the analysis of samples related to neuroscience. In this chapter, the literature regarding CE applications in neuroscience is described from the perspective of the analytical approach used. Without doubt, microdialysis is the most important temporal-sampling approach for biological systems. The information obtained can be enhanced if microdialysis is coupled online to CE. CE-laser-induced fluorescence is most often used in neuroscience applications, due to its high sensitivity. Single-cell analysis is also possible using CE, opening up new possibilities to study of neurological systems. Future trends are directed at developing more sensitive methods with minimal sample preparation. Despite the scarce use of mass spectrometry (MS) at present, new approaches should take advantage of MS to obtain better selectivity and for the identification of unknown molecules.
