Abstract

The spice production sustains losses for a number of reasons. Diseases and nematode pests frequently attacking spice crops are considered as a major factors affecting their production. Numerous nematode species impair the production of high-value spice crops such as turmeric, black pepper, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, tamarind, vanilla, and clove, and may suppress their yields up to 21%. Among the plant parasitic nematodes infesting the spice crops, burrowing nematodes, root lesion nematode, and root-knot nematodes are major nematode pests. Comprehensive integrated nematode pest management practices are essentially required for nematode management in the spice crops since repetitive use of toxic insecticides/nematicides results in residue accumulation in the produce that are hazardous to human health and the environment. In the present chapter, important nematode pests of spices and the effective methods for their management are presented in detail.
