Abstract
Beans and peas are important vegetable legumes and are quite susceptible to plant nematodes, especially to root-knot nematode and reniform nematode. In addition, stem and bulb nematode, root-lesion nematode, and cyst-forming nematode also attack beans and peas, causing significant crop damage. These nematodes, besides injuring the root system, affect nodule formation, aggravate the infection of soil-borne fungi, and break host resistance. Since most of the vegetable legumes are generally consumed green at the immature stage of plant growth, pesticide applications at the postplanting stage are disregarded by consumers for risk of residual effects. Cultural practices, biopesticides, organic manures, and other plant-based materials may offer effective and sustainable management of soil populations of plant-parasitic nematodes if exploited judiciously. The present chapter describes important nematode problems in vegetable legumes and offers solutions to their sustainable management.
