Abstract
The majority of midlife and older adults express a strong desire to remain in their own homes and communities as they grow older. Yet for too many older Americans, the ability to find affordable, accessible, and well-located housing that allows them to engage fully in their community is a significant, if not impossible, challenge. This chapter highlights the important role of housing as a platform to health and well-being in later life and explores key factors that are currently constraining older adults’ housing options, including the complex relationship between race, gender, income, wealth, health, and housing. Focusing on the intersection of demographic and housing trends, the chapter identifies some of the opportunities and challenges in the expansion of the nation’s stock of affordable and accessible housing to meet the pressing needs of an increasingly diverse older US population in the upcoming decades.
