Abstract

The various crop species are major agricultural products that play an indispensable role in sustaining human life. But the major problems of agriculture are facing abiotic and biotic challenges. The objective of plant breeding is to improve the crop resistance, especially for abiotic and biotic stresses, using conventional breeding and advancement of technology. In conventional plant breeding, breeders improve abiotic and biotic stresses, but conventional plant breeding takes a lot of time and is labor intensive. So, in addressing the challenges of conventional plant breeding, an advanced tool of genome editing using CRISPR/Cas9 can be used to modify the plant genome. Now, CRISPR/Cas has been profoundly utilized to improve biotic and abiotic stresses, so far. In this chapter, we focus on how CRISPR/Cas technology manipulated genes for developing resistant crop varieties against abiotic and biotic stresses.
