Abstract

The analysis is restricted to plane stress and plane strain problems. Stress functions are introduced and inverse and semi-inverse methods applied to the determination of the loading conditions for a variety of rectangular sheets. St Venant's principle is summarized and the displacements corresponding to the components of strain and any rigid body movements determined for the case of plane stress. Finally, the displacements produced by the bending of an end-loaded cantilever are determined and discussed.
