Abstract
The FORWARD to Professorship workshop was designed in 2001 to address the leaky pipeline of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) academia: it took aim at the critical juncture of doctoral and postdoctoral positions to professorship. This chapter describes the origins, goals, design, implementation, funding, and results of this career development workshop for pre-tenure STEM professionals, held from 2003 to 2008 in Washington, DC, and in 2005 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA. With this experience, the Pay It FORWARD program was developed in 2009 to train ten new teams to adapt or adopt the model workshop for regional-, discipline-, or ethnic group-specific audiences across the US, in order to further the reach. The design and implementation of the training program over the 2010–2013 period are described herein. Ten teams from across the US benefited from training, materials and resources, mentoring, advice from established Experts in Leadership Development (ELDers), and seed funding to develop, run, and refine their own career development workshops for women in STEM academia.
