Abstract

This chapter deals with the micro- and nanoscale modification of surfaces for cranio-maxillofacial and dental implants. The present chapter begins within brief fundamentals on titanium implants focusing on their chemical and morphological aspects of surfaces. Several methods of surface modification are described involving ordinary physicochemical methods (e.g., grit blasting and etching) and advanced functionalization procedures by using polymers, proteins, and bioactive ceramics. This chapter also reports the effect of the surface modification on the osteogenic cell behavior and consequent bone formation during the bone healing process.
