Abstract
The advancement of nanotechnology in the field of medicine and drug delivery has led to the development of many innovative strategies for accurate diagnosis and efficient treatment of clinical conditions, without secondary effects. Multifunctional micro- and nanoparticles provide various functionalities, including imaging, targeting, and therapeutic. These functional moieties can be integrated into the systems to achieve this goal. Multifunctional micro- and nanoparticles also enable simultaneous delivery of multiple therapeutic agents as well as imaging and therapeutic agents for real-time observation and evaluation of drug targeting. In this chapter, various micro- and nanocarriers are described. Moreover multifunctional micro-nanoparticle systems featuring a variety of functional moieties for imaging and therapy are also discussed.
