Abstract
The powerful Dutch/Texas research and education collaborations evidenced in this book grew in a remarkably short time. After Hurricane Ike, Texas researchers sought answers to storm surge flooding and reached out to Dutch experts. This was no accident because the Dutch are the best and most established engineers and scientists studying water-related issues in the world. This cooperation has allowed the newly formed Texas A&M University’s Institute for a Disaster Resilient Texas (IDRT) to jump start work on flood risk reduction strategies and practices of national and international importance as well as those focused on Texas. This chapter explores the similarities and occasional profound differences between the Netherlands and the upper Texas coast that have influenced and guided our joint research and education initiatives and delve into both regions’ respective approaches to flood risk reduction and suggests a path forward in further collaboration.
