Abstract
The world's energy threats have already arrived because of rapid population growth, extremely unbalanced supplies of food, polluted water, and diminished reserves of fossil fuels. To maintain the economic growth of a country, an alternative to plant oil will be necessary to avoid food and fuel crisis. Therefore, microbial lipid (microbial oil) is an alternative option for a sustainable approach. Microbial oil is very important for mankind and the environment as it has applications in different sectors. This chapter mainly discusses the global market of microbial oil in different sectors (food, pharmaceuticals, biofuels, cosmetics), and challenges behind the commercialization of microbial oil products are explicitly discussed.
