Abstract

In the following chapter, the authors give an overview of the current keratoconus (KC) definitions used in the literature. KC is described as a condition in which the cornea assumes a conical shape with coinciding corneal stromal thinning inducing irregular astigmatism, myopia, and protrusion, leading to mild to markedly impaired visual quality. Inflammation, progression, and bilaterality are also essential points discussed in the chapter. The chapter also reflects some gaps in information about consensus on criteria related to epithelial imaging, wavefront aberrations, corneal biomechanics, and posterior elevation in the definition of milder forms of KC. The chapter describes currently used terminology for subclinical KC and forme fruste KC.
