Abstract

This chapter describes and illustrates by example many handwriting systems and the importance they have in learning to communicate through writing. With increasing frequency, today's schools are not teaching students to write cursively. Both structured systems and the influence of friends and teachers who may have learned to write by different systems influence the student and the formation of their writing. Reduction or absence in the teaching of formal handwriting systems has led to further reliance on teachers and fellow students’ writing styles.
