Abstract

The chapter mentions the biodiversity hotspots and the factors affecting biodiversity hotspots in India, namely, Himalayas, Indo-Burman region, Sundaland, and Western Ghats. The factors affecting biodiversity hotspots in India are primarily the focus. The rich diversity in India is majorly due to its climate, enriched soil characteristics, favorable temperature, adequate rainfall which promotes a diverse range of botanical and microbial establishment. The chapter also focuses on the importance of habitat-specific microorganisms in the biodiversity hotspot areas. The biogeography conditions, namely, physicochemical parameters of the soil, pH, temperature, moisture, etc. are also an important factor affecting the habitat-specific microorganisms. The techniques for assessing microbial diversity are also taken into consideration in this chapter. The chapter gives the idea of the need to conserve and preserve habitat-specific microorganisms. The study on habitat-specific microorganisms will be helpful to gain knowledge about the biodiversity and importance of habitat-specific microorganisms.
