Abstract

This chapter presents the main features of geological survey and the basic idea of cross-section shape and alignment design in a shield tunnel project. The contents and requirements of geological investigation at the planning, design, construction, and operation stages and its basic means of survey are introduced. Outlining how to evaluate common engineering geological conditions and their influence on shield tunnel construction provides context for understanding the typical cross-section shapes of a shield tunnel and main considerations for alignment design. Finally, a case study is presented to explain how to carry out a supplementary investigation during shield tunnel construction.
