Abstract

Two selections are presented here on the history of two major new knowledge jobs created in the second half of the 18OOs, bookkeepers and professional secretaries. Professor Strom has studied various women's professions and in her book, Beyond the Typewriter , from which these selections come, she explores the evolution of women's work in offices during the period 1900 to 1930. She demonstrates that knowledge work opened new opportunities for women's work beyond farming, household chores, and teaching.
