Abstract
The fundamentals of water electrolysis are summarized in this chapter. Brief historical perspectives and the principles of water electrolysis cells are provided. The thermodynamics of the water dissociation reaction is detailed. Half-cell reaction mechanisms are described. Finally, the definitions of the energy and coulombic efficiencies are given.
