Abstract

Some sociologists hold that there is a clear progression in the developed technological societies from a first stage of universal primary education to a second, on which Europe entered after World War II, of universal secondary education, to a third of universal higher education. On this stage, the United States, with an estimated population of half the age group in higher education by 1970, is already entering. If those responsible for the improvement of higher education in the free world were forced to elect a single area for massive attention, the improvement of teachers and teaching techniques might be their choice. One cannot talk about a college teacher fully without talking about how he teaches as well as what he teaches. This chapter describes the current higher education scene in this consideration of college and university instruction and how it might be improved It focuses on the college teacher and the changing setting in which he works; techniques of teaching that are in use; and trends that might develop in the near future.
