Abstract

Chemotherapy is a common adjunctive treatment for most patients with malignant brain tumors and for selected patients with lower-grade neoplasms. In general, the most effective chemotherapeutic drugs are alkylating agents, such as the nitrosoureas, procarbazine, temozolomide, cisplatin, carboplatin, and cyclophosphamide. Other pharmacological agents that have been applied to brain tumors include methotrexate, vincristine, etoposide, irinotecan, and hydroxyurea. Promising treatment strategies that may be combined with chemotherapeutics include targeted therapies, personalized genomic or epigenomic therapeutics, or the application of electromagnetic tumor treatment fields. This Chapter reviews the pharmacology and clinical application of chemotherapy and complimentary supportive agents for brain tumor patients.
