Abstract

This chapter introduces basic concepts in a wireless telecommunication network that are fundamental to IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) as well. The generic wireless network comprises the core network and a radio access network. The core network provides the functions of call/session control, subscriber management, authentication, and service delivery to the user device, and the radio access network (RAN) provides the wireless access. Mobility is an important concept that allows a wireless phone to obtain service between different networks. The home network is where the mobile is provisioned, and the visited network is where the mobile requests service outside the home network. For mobile network operators to monetize the technology in the core and the RAN, a set of essential support functions are required. The Operational Support Systems and Business Support Systems provide the support for the operations support and business planning. These coordinate the billing and charging systems. Charging systems acquire the event information from the network and apply the necessary models of postpaid, prepaid, online, and offline methods.
